Safe and Sound

We realize that opinions on motorcycle sound emissions run the entire gamut from those who espouse "Zero Tolerance" to those who promote "Loud Pipes Save Lives." Although we do not wish to offend anyone or appear unsympathetic, stated simply, mufflers significantly louder than stock factory-equipped exhausts may not work well on a Stayin' Safe Motorcycle Training Tour for a number of reasons.

First, we found that the increased sound level emanating from bikes with "straight through" or modified exhaust systems can interfere with the ability of students, and other training tour members, to clearly hear critical radio commentary.

Second, on a couple of our tours (Shenandoah/Blue Ridge and Wisconsin Back Roads) a morning riding drill is often scheduled prior to breakfast at or near our lodging. In this regard, we do not wish to offend our host or ruin our long-standing reputation for respecting the rights of other guests.

Does that mean that we don't accept motorcycles equipped with aftermarket exhausts? Not necessarily. We have had students successfully participate while riding motorcycles equipped with exhaust systems that add character to the bike's sound without adding considerable increase in noise levels. Typically, if you can carry on a conversation while the bike is running, you are probably okay for most of our events. Just keep in mind that this becomes a judgment call and we reserve the right to turn away any motorcycle that we feel is too loud for conditions or which might interfere with a student's ability to hear radio commentary (to date, we have not had to turn away any rider). If you feel that your motorcycle may be questionable, just contact us and we will help you determine if the machine is suitable.
