Stayin’ Safe is best known for its multiple-day, on-street instructional tours that are conducted in a growing number of locations from just west of Washington, DC to California. But we also offer custom tours with training for small groups in virtually any location around the country. For those wanting private sessions for a group of riders or one-on-one, Stayin’ Safe is able to put together special programs in each of our established tour areas or in virtually any location.
Here’s what we do ...
The Stayin’ Safe experience combines the pleasures of motorcycle touring with real world, real-time advanced skills coaching. Regardless of which tour you choose, our programs are similar in that they offer riders of nearly every motorcycle type a fun opportunity to enjoy some of the best riding roads and attractions in the country while also learning advanced visual strategies and techniques for smoother cornering and safer riding. With a target ratio of three or four participants to each tour leader/coach, we conduct our instructional tours primarily on mountain roads, in rural settings and smallish towns with limited riding on divided highways and in urban environments (although we do have programs available for this type of riding).
And here's how we do it ...
Using one-way radio communication, coaching commentary is provided during the tour in real-world riding situations. This approach enables riders to apply new visual strategies and to sharpen cornering and braking skills en route in real time. In addition to the real-time coaching, our tour leaders/coaches conduct “chalk talks”, creating a virtual classroom along the roadside. These breaks provide opportunities to illustrate concepts, discuss techniques and address any questions participants may have. Our training tours are not fast sport rides and all riding sessions begin slowly. When conditions permit, we do sometimes enjoy an "adult" pace. At times we will ride at the pace of the slowest rider, but never at a faster pace than each rider is comfortable with.
The Classic Stayin' Safe "Neo Alpine" Training Tours
Stayin’ Safe’s advanced skills tours are comprised of two and three day riding routes through a mix of mountain twisties, rolling farmland, small towns, and a limited stretch of multi-lane highway riding. The average day covers approximately 175 - 225 miles.
Tours begin with discussion and parking lot drills to establish fundamental principles. Then, the group heads out to apply those concepts in real-life situations under the guidance of experienced coaches. Each tour includes at least one overnight stay, usually in a quaint and relaxing location. Over a nice dinner (complete with “adult” beverages if so desired), we enjoy the camaraderie of the group and the conversation often includes further discussion of the day’s riding and techniques. Using a library of video clips amassed in our years of coaching, we review common riding situations and a combination of best and worst practices. Discussion of braking techniques is often part of our morning routine before heading out onto the pavement again to enjoy more terrific roads and explore advanced techniques.
